Travis Housing Authority Misspent Millions

Federal audit finds mis-spent money and undocumented spending:

Federal auditors found that the Housing Authority of Travis County could not fully account for millions of federal dollars, including more than $2.5 million "haphazardly" transferred between federal and nonfederal programs without justification, more than $600,000 in undocumented spending and more than $3,000 that was improperly used for travel expenses.

The worst part of this report is the response ... they seem to be minimizing the issues with comments like The federal audit is "a bump in the road," Alter said.

This is why there is such a huge budget deficit. There is no accountability in the spending. Just think, if each city, state agency, school district, county, and federal agency were required to show how the money was spent in a transparent way and the taxpayers had an idea of where their own tax money was begin mis-handled, there would be almost immediate cost-savings found.

Also, the mis-placing of $2.5 million by a city or $1 billion by DART or $1.2 billion by TXDOT would not happen again as somebody would be accountable for those actions instead of a tangled bureaucracy of finger-pointing and administrative paperwork.
