RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AND SEXUAL RESPONSIBILITY

By Sarah Torres

President Barack Obama is considering granting a broader exemption to religious organizations from rules that require health insurance issuers to provide women with free contraceptives – including those which cause early abortions – sterilizations and related education and counseling, all of which are prohibited by the Catholic Church.  Catholic Belmont Abbey College is suing the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) over the rule, and more than 18 Catholic colleges and groups have written HHS protesting the rule.  Many Protestant groups can also be expected to object to the mandate because of their objection to contraceptives which cause early abortions.

The current rule, implementing Obamacare, exempts religious organizations whose purpose is the inculcation of religious values and that employ and serve primarily persons who share those religious beliefs.  The organization must also be non-profit as defined by the Internal Revenue Code.

Religious hospitals, charitable service organizations, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, adoption agencies and colleges are not exempted under the rule.

For most religious organizations, the inculcation of religious values is only one purpose, and many of them employ and serve people who do not share their beliefs.  As the Becket Fund points out, religious hospitals, charitable service organizations, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, adoption agencies and colleges have a long history of feeding the hungry, educating children, providing medical care in hospitals, and providing other much-needed social services to those who need them most.

Without a true exemption for religious organizations, the rule violates the First Amendment to the United States Constitution which says that Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion.  Religious groups’ refusal to support contraceptives, including abortifacients, and related counseling, constitutes a religious exercise.

The rule also violates religious organizations’ First Amendment freedom of speech rights by forcing them to pay for education and counseling that conflicts with their religious beliefs and teachings against pre-marital sex, contraception, sterilization and abortion.

“A monk at Belmont Abbey may preach on Sunday that pre-marital sex, contraception, and abortions are immoral, but on Monday, the government forces him to pay for students to receive the very drugs and procedures he denounced,” says Hannah Smith, Senior Legal Counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty which represents Belmont.

The penalty for non-compliance – heavy yearly fines and a prohibition on offering health plans altogether – would put religious groups at such a competitive disadvantage to attract sufficient staff and students that they could be forced to close, says the Becket Fund, leaving many of the poor without needed services.

The New York Times reports that Democrats in Congress object to broadening the exemption, saying it would keep contraception out of reach for millions of women.  NARAL Pro-Choice America President Nancy Keenan has said, “Birth control is essential for women’s health,” according to the Washington Times.

Even if free contraceptives are essential to women’s health, obtaining them does not depend on forcing religious groups to provide them against their sincerely held moral convictions.  Those who truly cannot afford contraceptives can either obtain them at family planning clinics funded by Title X of the Public Health Service Act or move to a non-objecting employer or college.

All employers, whether operating for profit or not, and whether or not they serve or employ people who share their religious beliefs, have a Constitutional right to the exercise of their religion unburdened by the government.  Insurance companies have a right not to offer such coverage, and individuals have the right not to enroll in such coverage.

TLR's Endorsement of Mark Strama and Black Genocide

Last Thursday afternoon I received four copies of the email message imaged herein from my "favorite" (tongue firmly planted in cheek) lobbying group.

You read it right. At this critical moment in the 2010 campaign season Texans for Lawsuit Reform's political action committee is broadcasting their endorsement of Mark “Obama” Strama (and I guess I'm helping them do so via this blog post). Of course, this is no surprise since Mark Strama’s uncle is the President of the organization and the chairman of its PAC. Uncle ‘T’ would not fail to endorse his favorite nephew legislator, Mark Strama to whom he has funneled double digit thousands of PAC money.

Texans for Lawsuit Reform (TLR) is a Republican-Democrat interloping single-issue lobbying group that, in Strama, is endorsing a candidate that has a history of voting the way they want him to, no doubt. But Strama also actively opposed the Voter ID bill and continues to be opposed to voter ID as I heard him state at the October 12th PfCONA Candidate Forum, voted against property tax relief twice (after he first voted for the unpopular business margins tax bill that had some property tax relief in it), wants to subsidize renewable energy and as a result drive up the cost of conventional energy sources (sounds like Obama’s war on coal fire plants), gave money to Obama in 2008 and even made Obama-Strama buttons as a fund raising gimmick in 2008. Basically, this "Rep" is a south paw when it comes to legislating and thus he is unfit for HD 50, which is not exactly a slam-dunk liberal district.

On top of all that, Strama is a pro-abort who supports Planned Parenthood and has sought to fund Planned Parenthood using our tax dollars. I have always known that Planned Parenthood was all about abortion rather than planning a family, in spite of its "family friendly" sounding name, but I did not realize how racist the organization really is until yesterday (10/16). That's when I joined Marilyn Jackson and Donna Campbell and others in East Austin for a screening of the documentary film, Maafa 21. I learned from the film that one out of every two black Americans are killed before they are ever born, a rate of mortality by abortion that dwarfs that of the much more more numerous white population. So I can say definitively, with a mountain of evidence (contained in the 138 minute documentary film) to back it up, that Mark Strama is participating in, and seeking to use tax dollars for, the genocide of black America through his support of Planned Parenthood.

Maafa 21 exposes Planned Parenthood’s genocidal past and present. See links to YouTube video’s about the film, below:

Maafa 21 Trailer

I think I’ve gotten to know Mark Strama's challenger, Patrick McGuinness fairly well over the past several years. Does Patrick care about tort reform in terms of it keeping Texas “business friendly” and job creating? Sure he does, in spite of the purposely misleading introductory paragraph in the Strama endorsement email from Uncle ‘T’ (misleading the reader to assume that Patrick is opposed to law suit reform, which he is not). But, unlike Planned Parenthood supporter Mark Strama, Patrick is unabashedly pro-life and he opposes the racist black baby killing machine that is Planned Parenthood (a machine that also ends the lives of thousands of red, brown, yellow, and white babies every day). On top of that, Reagan Republican and limited government patriot that Patrick is, he is far better qualified to Represent HD 5o than is Uncle ‘T’s little lefty nephew and McGuinness will likely vote in favor of tort reform, anyway, as a matter of good public policy.

So when Patrick is sworn in early next year, TLR can still get what they want out of the HD 50 Representative, if indeed they really want lawsuit reform that is good for Texas.

Demoncrats Poised to Lunge Left, Telling Pro-Life Dems and American Majority: Go to Hell! We're Aborting Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness

As the vote on the latest reincarnation of socialized heath care legislation approaches, it is as if the power hungry (seemingly demon possessed -- 'deem and pass' sounds like?) Democrat majority in the House is poised to lung left, telling Stupak's Pro-Life coalition of Democrat lawmakers and a majority of Americans: Go to Hell! We're aborting Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness and you can't stop us.

In November, I trust that many of these leftists will find their careers in Congress aborted, and a well deserved but much too late term abortion that will be. It's about time these anti-life, anti-liberty, and anti-property legislators felt a bit of the pain they have caused, and will cause, the unborn and born alike across the Republic, which God and the Founding Fathers have entrusted to us to enjoy and preserve. If the Dems are successful in going against the People's will with health care "reform", then after November these leftist will experience how law is aborted. They'll learn how to spell R-E-P-E-A-L.

Please pray for America. Here are some current stories for your prayerful consideration.

Stupak vote key in health care overhaul

Washington -- In the end, the health care debate on Capitol Hill could come down to appeasing the pro-life Democrat from the tiny town of Menominee on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Rep. Bart Stupak.

His firm hold-out for stronger language banning the use of federal funds for abortions has turned the Democrat's race for 216 votes in the House -- the magic number needed to pass the $940 billion legislation -- into a last-minute, nail-biting struggle for majority leaders...read more

Anti-Abortion Groups Counting on 'Pro-Life' Dems

By Lawrence D. Jones|Christian Post Reporter

The pro-life American majority, and hundreds of thousands of unborn children, are counting on the remaining self-labeled “pro-life” Democrats to hold firm for Sunday's historic House vote on health care, said the head of a leading anti-abortion group Saturday.

As a handful of self-labeled "pro-life" Democratic members of Congress announced their support for the current Health Care reform legislation, Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser insisted that any member of Congress who votes for the “pro-abortion” legislation can no longer call themselves “pro-life.”...read more

A Conscientious Objection to Paying for Abortion

As a follow-up to my previous post on this issue (see Travis County Healthcare Board of Managers, Please Reconsider) I decided to indicate in a simple way my conscientious objection by writing two separate checks for my property taxes, so that I could document on the check for the Travis County Health Care District tax that I was being forced against my will and in violation of my conscience to provide funds to Travis County that will be used to kill unborn children.

Travis County Healtcare Board of Managers, Please Reconsider

Thursday night at the Travis County Commissioners' Court on West 11th Street in downtown Austin, TX the not-elected-but-appointed-by-elected-officials Travis County HEALTHCARE District Board of Managers voted unanimously to use $450,000 of the district's property tax revenue (assessed without recourse to all Travis County property owners) to abort the unborn babies of poor and minority women. Margaret Sanger, who never met a person whom she considered of inferior race whom she didn't want to prevent from reproducing, would be so proud. The Board of Managers should be so ashamed of themselves.

As a result of this decision whether they like it or not, whether they live in Austin or not, whether they believe in the right to life or not, all Travis County Property owners' who pay their property taxes will be funding the killing of the unborn babies of poor and minority women. The Board of Managers made such a decision in the face of overwhelming opposition by the public. Why should the managers care about public opinion, they were not elected to their positions and so do not fear the public.

When unelected boards make life and death public policy decisions that are controversial and opposed by the public such decisions are dictates, not a consensus, not the decisions of a democratic body. Those decisions are therefore of questionable legitimacy. Those decisions should be appealed and litigated, and if there is no recourse they should perhaps be civilly disobeyed, in this case by a taxpayer revolt.

For the sake of decency and respect for the poor and minorities, we at The Travis Monitor urge the Hospital District Board of Managers to reconsider their ill-advised decision made without regard of public opinion.

And one more thing, ABORTION IS NOT HEALTH CARE.

Taxpayer Funded Abortions

All those 1970s things are coming back - We have a Jimmy Carter in the White House, high priced oil, environmental lunacy, and ... Taxpayer funded abortions.

On the local scene - Travis County's so-called Hospital district wants to spend taxpayer money on contracts with abortion providers. he governing board of managers will have a special meeting on Thursday, Dec. 10. At the meeting the board will vote on proposed contracts with three local abortion providers to use $450,000 in property taxes to pay for approximately 1,000 abortions for the next 12 months. They will decide on funding three abortion providers for non-medically necessary abortions on healthy unborn babies: Planned Parenthood at 201 E. Ben White Blvd., Whole Women's Health at 8401 N. IH 35, and Austin Women's Health Center at 1902 S. IH 35.
Texas Alliance for Life is tracking this issue. If you want to send a message to the nine members of the Board of Managers: Contact them here.

On the national scene - Senate Democrats defeated a measure to bar funding for abortion in the Obama/Reid Healthcare bill. The Nelson Amendment was defeated 54/45. Thanks to the Hyde Amendment of 20 years ago, we have for the past two decades avoided spending Federal dollars on abortions. That may end. Democrats are working to schmooze out a few more votes by relabelling public option. It's still over-expensive, over-regulatory, kills jobs, and harms the existing healthcare system... which means there is unfortunately a better than 50/50 chance the Democrats will all support it.

Taxpayer funded abortions, job-killing Democrats and a lousy economy. Oh joy. Bring out your bell bottoms and disco balls and party like its 1979.

Travis county taxpayers to foot tab for abortions?

An unaccountable and unelected bureaucracy making decisions behind closed doors? Nope, not the latest story out of DC, it's Travis county Government this time ... Travis County could spend $450,000 for abortions and refuses to discuss it with citizens. Will Travis county taxpayers foot tab for abortions? We'll be the last to be told.

Texas Senate move prolife bills forward

Texas Alliance for Life is cheering pro-life bills getting approval:

The Texas Senate today gave preliminary approval with a 20-9 vote to SB 182 authored by Sen. Dan Patrick (R-Houston), which would require doctors performing abortions to make an ultrasound image available to a woman at least two hours before proceeding with the abortion procedure. The House companion is HB 36 by Rep. Frank Corte (R-San Antonio).

"We are very happy to hear that the Senate has supported SB 182 with preliminary approval," says Joe Pojman, Ph.D., executive director of Texas Alliance for Life. "This is a good and necessary bill that will help enable women to make fully informed decisions about their medical care."

Early today, the Senate gave preliminary approval to SB 1098 by Sen. John Carona (R-Dallas) to create a specialty license plate with the message "Choose Life" to promote infant adoption. The House companion is HB 109 by Rep. Larry Phillips (R-Sherman).

Man of Steele Calls on Obama to withdraw Sebelius nomination

After GOP Senators delay vote to confim Governor Kathleen Sebelius to be HHS Secretary, and on the same day Governor Sebelius vetoed another late-term abortion bill, GOP Chairman Steele Calls on Obama to Withdraw Sebelius Nomination:

"She [Sebelius] admitted the full extent of the political contributions she received from Dr. Tiller only after press reports contradicted her previous financial statements," Steele pointed out. The GOP Chairman also challenged Sebelius to publicly reveal her position on "the extremist and heinous practice of late-term abortions."
Bravo to Chairman Steele. The Republicans are getting spine and a voice. I am going to call him "Man of Steele" if he keeps up hammering away like this.

Obamanation Squared

We've heard it said that Barack will bring about the Obamanation; however, this report from LIFENEWS.COM reveals the woman behind the Obamanation as an abomination in her own right.

That Michelle Obama is pro-abortion is no surprise to followers of the campaign.

In May, she came under fire for a letter she wrote defending partial-birth abortions and defending her husband during his 2004 campaign for saying he opposed a national ban on the gruesome abortion procedure.

At the Democratic convention last month, she attacked John McCain's pro-life views at a fundraiser for a leading pro-abortion group that calls for taxpayer funded abortions and promotes partial-birth abortions.

God help us (especially the unborn amoung us) if this Obamanation-able couple is given the keys to the White House.

Mark Strama Explains His Support of Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Below is the text of a letter I received from Texas House District 50 Representative, Mark Strama. He was responding to an email or phone call from me in which I expressed my opposition to embryonic stem cell research. I don't recall what exactly I said but I'm sure it was in line with my comments to Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson, posted April 18, 2007.

MARK STRAMA DISTRICT 50
July 31, 2007

Dear Constituent:

Thank you for your correspondence during the legislative session regarding stem cell research. I appreciate you taking the time to share your views on this issue with me.

I support stem cell research. It is an emerging medical technology that has many possibilities to benefit the citizens of Texas. While stem cell research, specifically embryonic stem cell research, is a contentious issue, the medical benefits this research has already shown to provide include possible cures for diabetes, reforming damaged nerve terminals, and rehabilitating people with multiple sclerosis. I believe the lives of the millions of Texans and their families who suffer from these diseases deserve our investment in this promising and competitive field of medicine.

Thank you again for writing to me about this important issue. If my office can be of assistance to you in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us at 463-0821.

Sincerely,

Mark Strama

Protect the innocent. Punish the guilty.

Protect the innocent. Punish the guilty. That is justice.

Sometimes some thing like that needs to be said when face with the 'moral confusion' of a liberal. This came up on a Redstate posting when a 'gotcha' Liberal decided to wheel out the ol' crusty argument that pro-life Christians couldn't be pro-death penalty. Not so. While compassion for all is a Christian virtue, The Bible is decidely okay with the death penalty:

"St. Thomas Aquinas finds all biblical interpretations against executions "frivolous", citing Exodus 22:18, "wrongdoers thou shalt not suffer to live". Unequivocally, he states," The civil rulers execute, justly and sinlessly, pestiferous men in order to protect the peace of the state."(St. Thomas Aquinas, 'Summa Contra Gentiles', Book III, 146.)
In truth, the mindset that ties the killing of innocent preborn life with the state-ordered execution of a hardened criminal is not a Christian mind, but a morally relativistic one, that has decided that judgements are, well, too 'judgemental'. I added: "If one can't detect the difference between how police and society should treat hardened criminals and how a mother should treat her own child, one really needs to buy a clue."

I added the following aside:

God forbid the pro-choicers who come up with this pseudo-theological sophistry actually consider the possibility that killing a pre-born human being is wrong IN ANY DECENT ETHICAL SYSTEM - Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, whatever. And that equally so, as a Jewish philosopher once put it: "To be merciful to the cruel is to be cruel to the innocent."
Those who fail to protect the innocent or fail to punish the guilty are failing to advance justice. We need to both to have justice. The liberal mindset often falls into the trap of moral confusion (and relativism) and consequently fails to acknowledge appropriate punishment as a prerequisite for justice.

Protect the innocent. Punish the guilty. That is justice.

Remembering Rev Jerry Falwell

Thousands of faithful attend the Reverend Jerry Falwell's funeral at the Thomas Road Baptist Church that he established over 50 years ago:

"He said, 'I believe God has called me to confront the culture,' and did he ever confront it," said the Rev. Jerry Vines, former president of the Southern Baptist Convention who gave a sermon that ranged from personal stories about Falwell to Biblical references.

The media Liberals have been going out of their way to 'eulogize' Jerry Falwell in terms of their disagreements with him. Or maybe 'spit on his fresh grave' is a better term, given the "Ding-dong, the witch is dead" sendoff from a Sun-Times columnist and similar 'good riddance' comments from the left ("bigot" "Osama" etc.). Even the more graceful can't recount his influence without sneering at his disagreeable views. Clarence Page gets in: "Speak not ill of the dead. That's easy advice to follow until you are remembering those who spoke a lot of ill while they were alive. ... Reports that his heart had failed were greeted with grim irony by those who thought it had failed years earlier."

To understand Why the Left hated Falwell you need to understand What Falwell wrought: Falwell wrought the kind of political re-alignment that awakened in many Christian believers an understanding of who and what was attacking their world-view and their values. As a result, Falwell's Moral Majority helped awaken a conservative Christian movement that became a linchpin for Reagan's victory over Carter in 1980 and Mondale in 1984, built on an opposition to abortion and other countercultural (soon to be 'dominant liberal cultural') views of the liberal elites. Falwell stopped the cultural steamroller, or at least slowed it down, and helped in the process to reshape how millions voted.

As J.R. Dunn puts it:
Falwell was despised and loathed for a very simple reason: he defied the leftist consensus, and he won. He made them back down. He frightened them terribly, by confronting them with clear evidence that the country was not what they insisted it was, and that their utopian dreams would never come to pass. That was his crime, one for which he could never be forgiven.

Star Parker notes that Rev Falwell is gone, but his influence isn't. The evangelical Christian vote, 22% of the total electorate, remains a key constituency within the Republican party and one of its most reliable voting blocks.
