I saw yesterday as a beating (because of the 12 hour convention and 14 hour work day for me) as we argued over procedural nuances and also as a tremendous opportunity to grow our Party because of the all the first time voters and attendees.

The outpouring of new faces and energy within our party is amazing. As long as these new people and new energy stays active within our Party and works for local candidates, Republicans will have a much stronger presence within Travis County.

I talked to many young people, college students and young professionals, that are now living in East Austin because of new housing developments and condos. This is fantastic.

With Rosemary Edwards as our new County Chairman, I expect the Republican Party to be able to reach out and plug many of these new people into leadership positions and to utilize their skills to benefit the Republican Party in Travis County and beyond.

I hope so too. As part of the Ron Paul Republicans, I am actively working to keep these young people in the Party. It would help greatly if you would convince fellow Republicans to stop sending out insulting phone calls and postcards claiming that Ron Paul supporters are "renegades".

I will say, however, that the sending out of such slander greatly helped us get our Ron Paul delegates to the convention. Insofar as keeping the young people in the party? I don't think that the "adults" set very good example for the young people by engaging in such behavior.

I posted this comment on blogcritics.com ...

"There is far more common ground between even the Legacy and Renegade factions of the local party, than there is between either faction and the Democrats."

This is undoubtably true, and its unfortunate that Dave Nalle made
Actually, there were a bunch of 'grassroots regulars', and you could tell where their hearts are when the 'lower taxes' and 'limited government' talking points got the loudest cheers.
It's a slam to say legacy doesnt represent the GOP. The GOP base is 80% prolife/profamily and fiscal conservative/limited govt/lower taxes, and that what most of the folks at the convention were. its not either/or, its both, with some more passionate about one side or the other, but a general consensus about these issues.

" Unfortunately, a lack of patience on the part of some may mean the democrats continue to rule the county well into the future."

You know the #1 problem with the Travis County Republican Party. Don Zimmerman once complained to me - nobody does anything. The TCRP grassroots has withered. Getting energy and ideas back in the TCRP is the main thing. I hope the Ron Paul folks stick around and help out.

i'd be a lot more sympathetic to the so-called "ron paul" group (were they all ron paul supporters?) if they'd had an iota of knowledge about parliamentary procedure. "bumbling" is a very precise term for what they were doing in attempting to present their action items.

if you're going to try to get a majority of people to vote for what you're doing, try being civil, well-mannered, and intelligent in all your behavior.

I'm all for getting young people involved, being one of them.

However, I want a distinction drawn - I'm young, and the only thing I support Ron Paul for is his congressional seat.

The minority report supporters had one thing right - it's not fair that smaller precincts were automatically left out from caucusing. But they should know what the real solution to the problem is - they didn't get out the Republican vote in 2006! If they fail to do so this November as well, they'll face the same problem in 2010.

This was my first experience with Travis County politics at large, and I must say, it's enough to make a person move to Williamson County! So much pettiness and infighting - did the "Ron Paul Republicans" realize that they were pawns for certain people's long-standing personal grudges?

Our party has a great many "young people" already. We'll be more likely to retain them if we get them involved, but they have to consistently show up (Saturday can't be the last or only time). It's a two-way street.

MJ,

You said:

But that is inaccurate. It should read, "they didn't get out the Rick Perry vote in 2006!" Governor Perry is not very popular right now, even with many in his own party.

Also, I hope the Republican Party is never satisfied with the amount of young people it attracts. But, with the way particularly the national party has forgotten about limited, constitutional government, no wonder the wells are running dry.

I hope everybody realizes that we need to work together to elect our slate of down-ballot Republicans this year.

We have:

Bob Vann (Constable, Pct 2)

Gerald Daugherty (Commissioner, Pct 3)

Mike Varela (Constable, Pct 3)

Raymond Frank (Sherrif)

Don Zimmerman (Tax Assessor-Collector)

Melissa Goodwin (427th District Court Judge)

Donna Keel (State Rep, Dist 47)

Pam Waggoner (State Rep, Dist 48)

Jim Hasik (State Rep, Dist 49)

Jerry Mikus (State Rep, Dist 50)

Organize your precinct to support these candidates.

In response to the contentiousness of the SD14 convention and discussions I've had with folks on both sides of the debate since I wrote my observations on the subject, I've launched a new website aimed at finding common ground between the various elements of the party so we can work together in a more positive way to advance the party and actually accomplish something more than backstabbing each other.

If you're interested in joining the discussion, the site is at http://www.gopunity.org

Come by and share your views.
